Above Ground and Underground Pump Stations
Both above ground and underground pumping stations have their advantages and disadvantages when it comes to wastewater and surface water management systems in the UK. Here we discuss the pros and cons of these types of pump systems.
Surface pump
There are two types of above-ground pump stations we can offer at Solid Links. The first is a complete pump station package that consists of a structural chamber with submersible pumps installed inside, whilst the second is a set of free-standing pumps which require an existing underground chamber.
Above ground pump stations with an existing underground chamber (wet well)
Advantage
- Accessibility: Above-ground pumps are located for easy access and service. This means you can receive services without special equipment or access to confined spaces.
- Cost: Above-ground pumps are generally less expensive to install than submersible pumping stations because there is no need to build or excavate an underground chamber.
Disadvantage:
- Aesthetics: Above pumps are unsightly and can detract from the visual appeal of an environment. It can also cause noise pollution, which can be a problem in residential areas.
- Damage: The location of the above ground pumps needs to be addressed as they can be prone to damage from vehicles/vandals.
Above ground pump station with a structural chamber
Advantage:
- Installation Cost: Above-ground pumps are generally less expensive to install than submersible pumping stations because there is no need to build or excavate an underground chamber.
Disadvantage:
- Aesthetics: Above pumps are unsightly and can detract from the visual appeal of an environment.
- Maintenance: The pumps still need to be maintained, but with a chamber that is above ground the access is more difficult (A platform would be required).
- Damage: The location of the above ground chambers need to be addressed as they can be prone to damage from vehicles/vandals.
Underground pump station:
Advantage:
- Reduced odours: Submersible pumping stations are located underground and are watertight, producing less unpleasant odours than ground-level pumps.
- Noise: Being underground, and sound is barely noticeable.
- Visual: Everything except the control panel is buried below ground, the visual impact is minimal.
- Maintenance: Submersible pumping stations are easier to service/maintain because the pumps can be pulled out for inspection by an engineer at ground level. There is no need to enter the chamber for general maintenance or servicing.
Disadvantage:
- Expensive: Submersible pumping stations are usually more expensive to install than surface pumps because underground chambers must be dug and constructed.
Choosing between the three options depends on factors such as location, availability, and cost. The most common option by far is the underground system. It is important to consult with a qualified and experienced service provider to determine the best option for your specific needs and requirements.

Information required for getting a pump station designed
When designing a pump station it is important to consider all possibilities. Your project needs to be fully envisioned in order to meet all requirements when a pump station is designed, manufactured and installed. You don’t want any aspects of your pump station to be missing, as it would make its operation difficult for your development.
Benefits of a “bespoke” pump station design over “off-the-shelf” systems
Not many applications involving a pump station are the same. Everything from the chamber size to the pumping distances/lifts will differ from site to site, even if it is only a slight change.
