Benefits of a “bespoke” pump station design over “off-the-shelf” systems
Not many applications involving a pump station are the same. Everything from the chamber size to the pumping distances/lifts will differ from site to site, even if it is only a slight change.
At Solid Links, we offer a bespoke pump station as well as off-the-shelf units. As good as an “off-the-shelf” unit can be, nothing beats a pump station that has been specifically designed to meet the requirements of any individual site.
4 Benefits of bespoke pump stations
We have broken down the main benefits of a bespoke system, as follows:
- The chamber size is determined by two main factors. The 1st is the volume required to comply with the 24-hour storage Building Regulations requirement. If an “Off the shelf unit” is installed, you would be either installing a chamber that is slightly too small, or slightly too big. If it is too small, Building Regulation’s requirements won’t be met, if it is too large, you are unnecessarily increasing the excavations and concrete costs.
- The second factor is the depth of the lowest incoming invert. By designing a chamber to accept the actual depths of the drains on site you can save on executions depths. This would be a benefit, especially in areas of a high-water table.
- When designing a bespoke unit, the size, and ability of the pumps installed is just as important as the 1st two points mentioned above. The ability to have pumps fitted that meet the exact pump duty requirements means the system will be working at its most efficient on the ’pump curve’, rather than close (or beyond) the limits of an “off the shelf” system where a pump would be used with a general range pump. If a pump isn’t working close to its optimal performance, the flow rates would be affected, electrical running costs would increase, and the expected life span of the pump would be reduced.
- In some rare circumstances, a twin pump may not be suitable. High-flow surface water pump station applications often benefit from having three, four, or more pumps fitted. With a bespoke system, it would be possible to achieve this quite easily, which would consider different rainfalls.
In summary, by installing a bespoke pump station, designed specifically for your application, you will ensure the chamber is correctly sized (which will reduce installation costs) and the correct pumps are installed (reducing running costs and increasing life span)
