How Your Septic Tank Works All household waste enters the septic tank via the drainage system. the liquids quickly pass through the septic tank into a soakaway, where it drains into the ground. the solid matter is retained by the baffles, and is broken down organically by by naturally occurring anaerobic bacteria. However, with our modern day usage of detergents, along with our increased water consumption, the anaerobic bacteria cannot cope and die off. This allows the sludge to build up, causing the smells often associated with septic tanks. This is the reason why all septic tank manufacturers recommend the tank is emptied at least once a year. to make things worse the untreated solids break away and are flushed into the soakaway causing blockages.
